American Indian Arts Celebration (AIAC)
Every year in early November, the Museum hosts the annual American Indian Arts Celebration (AIAC) on the Museum festival grounds in the Seminole Indian Big Cypress Reservation. A three day long event, it focuses on the tradtional and contemporary arts, dance and music of the Seminole, Southeastern and other Indian tribes from across the country. The festival has become widely regarded as an indigenous cultural explosion in the Everglades and grows in attendance from year to year.
Featuring Native artisans and performers spanning territories from the far West to the Northern Plains and the Southeast, the event gains in popularity among the artists and performers that return each year and entices those looking to join in the festivities. Silverwork, beadwork, woodwork, basketry, leatherwork, photography, paintings, jewlery and more are represented at this Indian market.
A central staging area is set up to showcase the talents of Seminole Star Search winners, Native musicians and cultural dancers. Variety is the key having hosted such exciting acts as Casper and the 602 Band, Grey Wolf Blues Band, Martha Redbone, Keith Secola and the Wild Band of Idnians, Bill Miller and other award winning American Indian recording artists. Such thrilling Dance groups as the YellowBird Apache Dancers, the Anikuthua Warriors and the Great Plains Indian Dancers have rounded out the engaging cultural exhibition dancing.
Educational and interactive activities for youth groups and the general public are thoughtfully enacted each year. The Craft Corner allows children the opportunity to create their own Seminole inspired craft; the Critter Show exposes the public to the exciting and wild world of animals; the Archaeology tent affords visitors keen insight into the role of archaeology and the Tribal Historic Preservation Office; and the Museum Information tent shares exciting Museum news and invites attendees to join the Museum with special introductory offers.
The sensational backdrop for this event is the Everglades, just about an hour in any direction from most major and smaller cities in Broward, Dade, Collier and Hendry counties. The rich blue skies, the verdant fields and the miles of sawgrass and hammocks, provide the ultimate setting for this amazing celebration of arts, dance, culture and music.
The 14th Annual AIAC weekend will feature Native artisans representing 10 states and will include cultural performances by Kevin Locke, as well as the Aloha Islanders. There is sure to be dynamic fun at every turn with Alligator Wrestling, Critter Show, Seminole Story Telling, Raffle Prizes, the Archaeology Tent, the Craft Corner and the all new AIAC digital Scavenger Hunt on the AIAC Facebook page!
