The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Oral History Program preserves Seminole history, memory, and culture through recording the spoken word. Additionally, the program utilizes the best practices available to the field. The program is currently in the process of digitizing and indexing the existing oral history interviews and conducting new interviews.
The Oral History Collection also houses material related to preserving the Seminole’s two languages, Miccosukee and Creek. The program preserves language through the use of a linguist, conducting interviews in the native language, and translating existing interviews into English. The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki’s language initiative is only available to Seminole Tribal Members.
The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Oral History Program abides by the Oral History Association (www.oralhistory.org) guidelines and best practices in addition to the American Association of Museums (www.aam-us.org) guidelines and best practices.
Oral History collection
At the present time the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Oral History Program's Oral History collection and language collection is available to Seminole Tribal Members only. There are a select number of non-Seminole interviews that are available to the public. The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum also houses a reference collection of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida's Seminole interviews. The interviews collected by the University of Florida are available to the public at the museum and at: http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/UFDC/UFDC.aspx?c=oh4&s=ohsem. The collection is comprised of hundreds of VHS, DVD, CD, Audio Cassette Tapes, DAT tapes, reel to reel, BETA, and other media formats. The collection is currently undergoing a major digitization project.
